The Social Action Committee of Congregation Beth Israel presented its annual Friend of the Community award on April 12 to the League of Women Voters of Central Delaware County. This award recognizes local individuals or groups of any faith who support or embody the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, or Hebrew for “Healing the World.”

The president of the local LWV, Barbara Amstutz of Swarthmore, accepted the award on the group’s behalf. Amstutz spoke about the history and accomplishments of the League in its work to create informed and active participation in local government, and good governance through education and advocacy. She stressed the League’s work in non-partisan voter education, which is crucial in today’s world. One of its greatest accomplishments is related to the gerrymandering reform.

The Friend of the Community Award has been presented by the Social Action Committee of Beth Israel for nearly 20 years.
