Monday, January 20, 2020, marks the 25th anniversary of this federal holiday celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Here is a partial listing of local events and volunteer opportunities.

Sunday, January 19
MLK Celebration with Nikki Johnson-Huston, 3 pm

Keynote speaker Nikki Johnson-Huston will talk about how she overcame poverty and homelessness. The celebration will feature music from the Delco Mass Choir, Penncrest Chamber Orchestra, and BIMAS Klezmer Band. Media Fellowship House, 302 S. Jackson St.

Monday, January 20
#BagItChester, 8:30 - 10:30 am

Teams of volunteers will spread out across the city of Chester distributing reusable shopping bags decorated with an image of the civil rights icon. For more information: www.chesterbusiness.org. Trinity Episcopal Church’s Morning of Service, 10 am - noon

In support of Caring for Friends, a non-profit organization that provides meals to 1,700 home-bound individuals, volunteers will assemble breakfast bags with enclosed note cards made by the congregation’s children. Hot food for 100 frozen dinners will also be prepared. 301 N. Chester Road, Swarthmore.

Penn State Brandywine and FUSE Celebration, 10 am - noon 

This annual, family friendly MLK Day celebration will focus on acts of kindness, educational activities, inclusion, and artistic expressions of Dr. King’s legacy. Volunteers are asked to bring toiletries and socks to be donated to Backpacks 4 the Homeless, and/or non-perishable food items for local food pantries. We are also collecting old towels or blankets for the Providence Animal Shelter. Organized by Penn State Brandywine’s Center for Ethics and Civic Engagement in partnership with FUSE (Fellowship of Urban Suburban Engagement) and Penn State Brandywine student clubs and organizations. Screening of “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” 4 - 6 pm

Based on the true story of a young black man who grew up with his father in a beautiful Victorian house in San Francisco and was later displaced. Written and directed by Joe Talbot. Lang Performing Arts Center Cinema, Swarthmore College.

Let Music Sing! Chester Children’s Chorus and Play On Philly, 4 - 6 pm

For a combined 35 years, Chester Children’s Chorus and Play On Philly have provided high-quality music instruction to students in the cities of Philadelphia and  Chester. Today, two communities become one as they perform a free concert honoring Dr. King’s legacy. Lang Concert Hall, Lang Music Building, Swarthmore College.
