Deer Hunting in Longpoint Wildlife Sanctuary

Deer Hunting in Longpoint Wildlife Sanctuary

To the Editor:

There has been a deer hunt in Rose Valley borough for the past ten or so years. The hunters are usually police, we have been told, from surrounding communities. During that time, there have been numerous occasions when hunters have disregarded our safety, and on several occasions the State Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission have been called in to resolve the issues.

This year hunters have aggravated residents of Longpoint Lane, and the community is very upset about 1) the hunters’ activities and 2) the poor response of our borough council to address our concerns. One major complaint by the residents is that we are locked out of the sanctuary for four months of the year. We can go in one day a week and at midday hours, when most people are at work.

Council has ignored our requests for years, while they continue with the problematic hunt on an annual basis. More than 50% of the residents on this street have voiced strong objection to our group and to the borough. There are several upcoming meetings being held in the upcoming weeks to address this situation.

I had an encounter this past Sunday with a hunter on my property, where the hunter videoed me while I was doing yard work. Strange how the hunters can harass us, but, we are strongly warned by our borough council to not engage them at all. If we do not police their activity, then no one will. We residents are upset and plan to be heard in the upcoming meetings with the borough.
