To the Publishers,
I am deeply saddened to hear that editors Rachel Pastan and Satya Nelms (The Swarthmorean’s first African American female editor) have resigned amid concerns regarding content on social justice issues.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading pieces by both of these talented artists and believe their fresh perspectives have invigorated an otherwise stale publication.
I believe I speak on behalf of a far larger group when I say that Swarthmore residents and loyal subscribers like me enjoyed the authentic, relevant, and thought-provoking content of Rachel Pastan and Satya Nelms and desire more of it, not less.
I am concerned that the editors felt so constrained by the publishers’ directives that they felt their only option was to resign. This suggests to me the presence of a power gradient so strong, stifling, and toxic there can be no space for creativity or learning.
I challenge you to take a closer look inward: bring them back to the table from a place of curiosity and make a faithful effort to bring this to a resolution that Swarthmore residents can be proud of.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
Sincerely,
Allison Garfinkel
