Making a difference with CASA
To the Swarthmorean,
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I read the article on CASA in the September 10, 2021, issue of the Swarthmorean.
As the article stated, CASA stands for the “Court Appointed Special Advocates.” This group of dedicated volunteers work with the most critically ‘at risk’ children involved in the social welfare system within our county.
I became the first “Child Advocate’’ in Delaware County appointed by then President Judge Francis Catania in 1982, even though I had started this work the year before. For the last 39 years I have held this position representing hundreds of children at any one time in the social welfare system. In 1992 I was part of the exploration team that visited York County, Pennsylvania, to observe their CASA program and to report back to Delaware County, whether or not Delaware County could also benefit from a CASA program. The program was highly endorsed, began that year and has been an important vibrant organization ever since supporting Delaware County, Children and Youth Services.
I have worked with CASA on a continuance basis since 1992 and am continually impressed with the dedication and positive influence CASA volunteers make in the lives of so many children.
I salute the six named people in the article from Swarthmore, and their personal dedication to attempt to improve the life of one child at a time. Collectively this organization makes a huge difference in the lives of the children that are the most “at risk” in our county. CASA makes a difference.
If you want to “change the world, one life at a time’’ CASA may be an excellent opportunity for you to help children and make a difference in our community. www.DelcoCASA.org.
