Ice Fall

(January 1, 1976)

New Year’s Eve rain turned ice in the dark.
Morning comes; rising low, sun appears.
Warmed as they glisten, trees in the park,
shedding their armor like showers of tears,
weep for the painful year we have passed,
freed for the spring that will come at last.
