The Catbird

Diving, like a small, feathered seal
Into the pachysandra sea,
Bobbing, weaving,
Then the sharp jab
Of beak, a spear
To catch the prize.
Something primitive — a beetle?
Shines in the bird’s maw.
An exercise of power worn
With beauty.
