Accidents

  • June 6 at 2:20 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to the area of the 900 block of Westdale Avenue for an accident involving a tractor-trailer. At arrival, it was determined that the Coca-Cola delivery truck had been traveling west on Westdale Ave. when the top portion of the trailer struck a low-hanging tree limb. The tree limb tore the entire passenger side top of the trailer. The truck had to be unloaded of its soda products, then was able to be taken from the scene. There were no injuries as a result of the crash, and no property damage was reported.

  • June 7 at 12:25 p.m: Officers responded to the front of Borough Hall for a motor vehicle crash with no injuries reported. It was determined that a car was pulling into a metered spot, and according to the driver, the engine began to race, causing the vehicle to jump the curb and strike the retaining wall that lines the Borough lot and sidewalk. There were no injuries as a result of the crash, with minor damage occurring to the car and to the retaining wall.

  • June 9 at 6:43 p.m.: Officers responded to the area of N. Chester and Riverview roads for a motor vehicle crash involving two cars. It was determined through investigation that both vehicles were driving north on N. Chester Rd., with the first vehicle stopped for the solid red traffic signal. The second unit was pulling up behind the first, when the driver reported that their foot slipped off the brake, causing their car to strike the vehicle in front of them. There were no injuries as a result of the crash, and both vehicles sustained minor damage and could be driven from the scene.

Other

  • May 28 at 12:55 a.m.: Officers were dispatched to the area of the 200 block of President Ave. in the Borough of Rutledge for a burglary that was interrupted. As officers responded, they were given information that the suspect, who was found inside a home and ran when confronted, was last seen running towards Macdade Blvd. Officers from surrounding departments responded to assist, and while checking the immediate area, Swarthmore Police observed a subject fitting the description running from Swarthmore Ave. towards 6th Ave. in Folsom. The suspect was stopped and detained, while the witness identified him as being in his home. The suspect, identified as Brandon Smith of Havertown, was arrested and charged criminally with burglary and related offenses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled and pending.

  • June 8 at 5 p.m.: Officers were called to the 500 block of Cedar Ln. for an animal bite. It was determined that a resident was bitten on the leg by a raccoon. As officers arrived, the animal was seen in a neighboring tree. The animal was captured and secured, then turned over the Pa. State Game Commission. The resident sought treatment at Springfield Hospital for a minor injury. The animal was tested, and came back positive for rabies. Residents are to use extreme caution when dealing with wildlife. Residents should keep an eye on children, and pets, to make sure they can avoid coming in contact with a potentially rabid animal. If seeing an animal that causes concern, please contact the Swarthmore Police, or dial 911, so officers can respond, and take the appropriate action.
