To the Community:

The Swarthmore Public Library Board of Trustees and Staff want to thank our amazingly engaged community for your active use and support of the library. This summer we held 49 adult events with more than 530 participants, and 121 children’s events with a whopping 4,095 participants! In May the Library’s 90th birthday was a fun, festive celebration, and raised $2,000 for the library. We truly have a community that fully utilizes and understands the importance of a healthy, vibrant public library.

With that, we would love to invite you to help us continue our mission to empower our community to Read, Meet, Discover and Grow. It takes an involved and active community to support a library as active (and as small!) as ours. There are many ways you can volunteer and support our wonderful library and the programs we offer, and there’s something that’s right for almost everyone.

  1. Board of Trustees: The library has a nine-member board who serve three-year terms and help the library continue to thrive and grow for our community. We currently have one open board seat for a trustee to start a three-year term in January 2020. Candidates must be residents or taxpayers of the Borough, of voting age, and able to obtain Pa. Criminal Background and Child Abuse Clearances. A short application is available at the Library or on the Library’s website. Completed applications must be submitted to the Library by Thursday, October 31, 2019.

  2. Strategic Planning Committee: The Strategic Planning Committee helps the board and staff develop the long-term roadmap for the library and how it will grow and serve our community in the future. We are looking for people who have interest and expertise in strategic planning and development. People interested in serving on this committee can contact Amber Osborne at swdirector@delcolibraries.org or James Banko at jamesbanko@msn.com.

  3. Friends of the Library: Our beloved Friends help raise funds for the library so we can bring you the latest materials, services, and events. They run our cherished bi-annual book and bake sale. We are currently looking for people to engage whether as officers and/or to help the Friends organize important events. If interested, please contact Carol Kennedy at foswpl@gmail.com or leave your name at the library.

  4. Volunteers: Many of the great folks who check out your books, look up information, and shelve books are all members of our own community. These volunteers allow us to be open for more hours than many other local libraries and help us use our limited funds to support additional materials, services, and programing. Come help the library and meet your neighbors by volunteering! If interested, please contact the library.

Thank you again for all that you do to make the Swarthmore Public Library a cornerstone of our community!
